On a series of consecutive Fridays three times a year, students, spouses and their caregivers learn tips and techniques to aid them in activities that most people take for granted like brushing teeth, sewing on a button, grocery shopping, cooking meals, and computers just to name a few.
They learn that it is okay at the restaurant to ask for your meat to be cut before it leaves the kitchen, that it is okay to ask to sit NOT facing a window, where and how to use a white cane, the availability and training of service animals, and about writing guides that assist with written tasks like writing a check.
Students are exposed to the latest aids available including CCTVs and other magnifying devices. In addition, speakers from the VA, SCAT, Conklin Davis (CVI), Division of Blind Services, Slonim Law (Elder Attorney), Talking Books Program etc.
All age groups are welcome – those with macular degeneration, glaucoma, eye injuries, vision problems as a result of diabetes or any other eye disease.
Caregivers are more than welcome to attend classes also; they will go through the classes just as the students would. So, they must register for the class as well if they intend to stay.
